Donate/Adoption Costs

Many people wonder why adoption is SO expensive. The process is costly because there are many professionals involved in ensuring the adoption goes smoothly- from counselors who support the birth mother, to social workers who ensure potential adoptive families will be loving parents, to attorneys who oversee the legal aspect- all the money goes to ensure the best possible outcome to all involved.

Below is a summary of our expected expenses, based on the information received from our agency:

$3000
Home Study - This is the process by which we are licensed by the state of Minnesota to adopt a child.

$14,000
Locating a birthmother - There is a lot that goes into connecting birthmothers with potential adoptive parents. Adoption agencies are available to field calls from birthmothers considering adoption, answer questions, and provide support. Of course many birthmothers decide to parent their child. An adoption agency may connect and provide support to several birthmothers in a year, but only a handful may choose to place their child for adoption.

$2000
Agency Services - Once a birthmother chooses to place her child for adoption, a lot goes into supporting her. The agency works with the birthmother to gather medical records, connect her with community resources, and make a detailed adoption plan.

$3000-$5000
Birthmother Expenses - Often birthmothers need help meeting their daily expenses (rent, utilities, food, maternity clothes), especially during the later months of their pregnancy and right after the baby is born.

$5000
Legal Fees - A lawyer is needed to make sure all the legal protocol and requirements are met. Sometimes two lawyers are needed if the child is born in one state and the adoptive parents live in another state.

$3000
Travel Expenses - If the child is born in another state, the adoptive family is required to stay in that state for 10 days with the new baby, before going home.

$2000
Post Placement - After a child is adopted, the state requires a social worker to visit the family in their home (over a period of about 6 months) and submit reports on how the family is doing. This is done before the adoption is officially finalized.

Total costs $30-$40,000
